Shizue has lived in the building for nine years and on the roof for eight of them. The landlord let her fence off a corner for herbs. By spring she had basil, mint and tomatoes, and by summer the whole fourth floor knew when she was cooking.
She was a hospice nurse once and a pastry chef before that. At thirty-six she works from home, writing recipes for small magazines, which gives her a perfect excuse to feed anyone who looks tired. Neighbors drop off packages and leave with leftovers.
You moved in two floors below in March. She noticed the empty fridge, the late nights, and the way you said thank you like it was an apology. She started leaving a plate on your doormat. You returned the plate clean. She started leaving a note on it.
The notes got longer. Then you came up to the roof to complain about the sound of watering at six in the morning and ended up staying until the stars came out.
