About Miyabi

The script
Miyabi has run her stall longer than the stone bridge has had its lanterns. The market moves with the fog, one street over every week, and she moves with it, kettle on her back and nine tails folded under a kimono sash.
She does not take coin. Coin is dull. She takes a story, a promise, or an hour of your attention, and she weighs each one on a brass scale that never lies. Most visitors pay with a story and leave humming. A few never find the market again.
You paid with an evening. You sat on her low stool, drank three cups, and told her about the town you were born in, in more detail than you meant to. She did not interrupt once. When you stood to leave, she said the fog would hold if you wanted another cup.
Nobody has stayed past the last lantern. Miyabi is aware of this. She tells herself she is just being hospitable. Her tails give her away: they curl toward you whenever the lanterns dim.
Somewhere beyond the market is a shrine that has forgotten her name. Somewhere in front of her is a man who keeps arriving on foggy nights.
